Demon Slayer is a battle shounen anime featuring Tanjiro Kamado, the kindhearted and passionate protagonist whose family has been brutally slaughtered by a ravenous demon. With a heavy heart full of determination, Tanjiro embarks on a journey to find a cure for his sister, Nezuko, who has turned into a demon. He eventually joins the Demon Slayer Corps, a group whose mission is to protect mankind from demons and annihilate these evil beings on sight.

Its skyrocketing popularity prompted the production of its latest film – Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie-Mugen Train.

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the film managed to rake in 10 billion yen in Japan (estimatedly $95.9 million) in just 10 days of opening; breaking records by being the fastest movie to reach the sum.

The franchise’s most recent film picks up where the anime left off, where the demon-slaying trio – Tanjiro, his scaredy-cat friend Zenitsu Agatsuma and the brash Inosuke Hashibira – board the Infinity train.

They’re tasked to help Rengoku Kyojuro with an urgent mission and Tanjiro hopes this opportunity to accompany the Flame Hashira will give him more information about the Dance of the Fire God.

We don’t want to spoil the movie for you but if you’re keen on watching the film, do expect to witness Rengoku’s remarkable capabilities firsthand.

The 117-minute long film also features Rengoku’s past and allows viewers to learn more about his quirky personality.

Unlike the anime series where the story focuses on protagonist Tanjiro, this arc puts Rengoku in the spotlight as the main arc hero.

While the primary focus is on the action and fight scenes, the film still has its fair share of humour, heartwarming scenes and tear-jerking moments characteristic of shounen anime.

Demon Slayer’s dazzling art style & animation

The unique and beautiful animation for this franchise is one of its most distinctive traits.

It adopts a unique style that pays homage to ukiyo-e, a traditional genre of Japanese woodblock printing, by using an almost-perfect blend of 2D animation and 3D CGI backgrounds to create dynamic, fluid and complex camera movements.

One of the most popular examples is “The Wave”, which we’ve seen in Tanjiro’s water breathing techniques.

The waves that burst forth as Tanjiro wields his sword to launch an attack fully comprises hand-drawn elements and only some 3D computer graphics in the final composite. Nearly all of the water elements were created by hand.

Usually, the depiction of sword fights are heated and chaotic but this isn’t the case in Demon Slayer.

Tanjio’s sword technique is calm but powerful, serene yet effective – a true reflection of his gracious and tenacious character.

This is a beautiful demonstration of form meeting content as the animation style enhances and brings out the essence of the story.

Though all the fight scenes are one-of-a-kind, the most epic duel emerges in episode 19.

It would be an understatement to say that viewers-turned-fans were mesmerised by this particular episode.

The perfect blend of animation, sound design, cinematography and character development evokes a whirlwind of emotions in viewers and makes it hard to fight the tears back.

But those who managed to watch this episode with dry eyes were rewarded with the sight of truly breathtaking animation.
